Why is a handheld shower head better than a wall mounted shower head?

One thing I’ve noticed is that people are still buying fixed showerheads at a much faster rate than the hand held shower heads. That actually raised my curiosity.

Just how many people are still using fixed shower heads. And more importantly...uhm..WHY?

The average person takes more than 28,000 showers in a lifetime according to the National Geographic Channel. Rather than just go with the flow and settle for a standard shower setup, consider switching to a handheld showerhead to get the most of your shower experience.

Not only because the spray of water can be easily redirected where you want it to go, but also these showerheads offer an easy way to conserve both water and energy without sacrificing the water pressure.

Also, it’s a pretty simple switch, you can install these units just like you would a regular shower fixed head, without an extensive demo or refinishing.

Not convinced yet?

Here are the top 5 reasons a handheld showerhead might be the perfect upgrade for your bathroom.

1. Water Conservation

As you might already know, fixed showerheads send large quantities of water (oh, and money) down the drain as you shower. Like, literally.

Ok, you might not give a s**t about water conservation, but hey, who doesn’t care about their money?

Some people say that water will be the petroleum of the 21st century, so next time you turn on the tap, think of the water pouring out as liquid gold going down the drain.

Conserve this precious resource by directing water only where it’s needed. You will not only lower your water bills but you will also cut the cost of energy required to heat this water. Many handheld showerheads help you cut water consumption even further by using a shut-off switch right on the handle. With this switch right in your hands, you’re more likely to shut the water off or turn it down as you lather up or shave your legs.

Many manufacturers even offer low and ultra low-flow handheld showerheads designed to give you the best shower experience with the least amount of waste. These units include special aerators, which add air to the water spray in order to increase the pressure, while decreasing the water used.

By choosing one rated at 2 GPM or less you will be saving a minimum of 2,300 gallons of water a year.

2. Helping Someone Bathe

If you have an elderly parent living with you, if you’ve injured yourself or if you’re just trying to bathe your children or pets, you probably know how difficult it can be to give them a proper shower with a fixed shower head.

While fixed showerheads can’t be lowered, most handheld devices feature a hose that ranges from 3 to 6 feet or more.

When washing children, you know that they are not going to get the full benefit of a shower, which is why we usually bathe them. However, children can get into some really interesting situations. Putting a mud-covered child into a bath just means they marinate in that mud. The handheld shower head lets you rinse them off first and also you can rinse a child’s hair while keeping soap away from the face-and trust me on this one.

For seniors, it’s sometimes safer to sit down, especially when they are tired or in a wheelchair. The hand-held makes it a lot easier to clean up or even allows them to shower without assistance.

Even more difficult than washing a child is washing a dog. Without a hand held shower head, you pretty much are guaranteed that your dog is getting out of the bath with shampoo still in the coat. Pouring buckets and buckets of water over your dog is just..impractical. A handheld unit concentrates the spray right where you need it, allowing you to wash away stinky pet odors.

3. Easier showering

Picture this: you’re showering and you’re ready to rinse the soap from your body and hair but the water is only coming from a fixed point. It’s getting quite hard to remove all the lather and you have to move around quite a lot in order to get it done. The floor is wet, slippery and soapy  and you fall.

If you have a handheld shower head, you can stand in one spot and direct the water to wherever you want it to go. Not only is this safer, but also more efficient.

This leads directly into the biggest benefit for women..

Easy shaving

Shaving your legs is a chore that no one enjoys. From the awkward angles you have to reach, to the apparently impossible task of washing away all of that hair after shaving, fixed shower heads turn it into a real production.

Hand-helds let you sit down in the shower to more easily reach the different parts of your legs. Better still, they let you quickly target the places where the hair wasn’t washed off yet. You can get a much cleaner shave when you don’t spend as much time focusing on trying to get rid of the shavings.

So, time to say goodbye to shaving in the sink.

Also, for those who enjoy using a thick conditioner or hair mask in their hair, regular shower heads may not be able to get all the product out of your hair without a lot of wasted water and scrubbing on your part.

Oh and one other thing. Don’t know about you but there are some days when I just want to take a shower but not to wash my hair.

What are you going to do? Use a shower cap? Myeah...no thanks.

4. Create A Spa-like Experience At Home

Now, don’t know how many of you miss it, but I haven’t been to the spa ever since this global pandemic started. And, to be honest with you, I really do miss the experience-not enough to make me break the quarantine though.

So, since I was spending that much time at home, and I had some free time on my hands, I started making some upgrades in the house.

One of them was the shower head. After much research, I have finally decided to get rid of my traditional fixed shower head. (And, btw, I did the switch by myself. No plumber was involved-and I have two left hands).

I can’t begin to tell you how this has improved my shower experience. Even the most basic handheld shower head offers improved comfort and flexibility over traditional fixed models. Handheld units double as massagers, and many include multiple settings, so you can create a spa-like experience tailored to your needs.

After a workout, you can even use a handheld shower head to ease sore muscles with an at-home massage therapy session right in your bathroom.

Also, on days you need both hands free, simply place your handheld showerhead back into its mounting bracket and use it like a fixed shower head and enjoy both worlds.

5. Keep Your Shower Sparkling

Don’t know if you’re a clean freak like me, but I always find myself struggling to scrub away all the soap scum and mildew on my shower walls.

Some people say that the most effective way to keep your shower looking fresh is to wipe it down after each use, but let’s be serious..who’s got time for this?

Especially since so many of you still have the fixed shower head. I can’t begin to imagine the struggle you’re going through.

How does it really work though? Do you fill a bucket of water and use it for cleaning and another one and use it for rinsing it out? Sounds like it’s a real hassle.

Imagine having a handheld shower head. All you have to do is pick it up from its mounting bracket and wiggle it around on your shower walls and you’re pretty much done.  Cool, huh?

Now, one reason I heard some people refuse to make a switch is because they think that it’s very “classy” to have a handheld shower head  and the hose can be tacky and strange. But, to be perfectly honest here,  for people who aren’t living in a model home, we say you’d be doing yourself a disservice by not having a handheld.

Thank me later.
